Managing Vibration in EV Battery and Electrical Assemblies

EV and electrical systems are built to move, but the components inside them often need to stay firmly in place.

Road vibration, mechanical movement and repeated shock can place stress on battery assemblies, electrical components, connectors and sensitive electronics. Over time, that movement can contribute to noise, wear, loosening and potential component failure.

Small Movements Can Create Bigger Problems

Managing vibration isn't simply about securing a component more tightly. Different materials, surfaces and components respond differently to repeated movement.

Foams, adhesive tapes and custom converted components can help absorb vibration, provide cushioning, reduce movement and isolate components from surrounding structures.

The challenge is selecting and designing the right solution for the application.

Engineers may need to consider factors such as:

  • Expected vibration and shock levels

  • Compression and recovery requirements

  • Temperature and environmental exposure

  • Component weight and geometry

  • Available space and mounting surfaces

  • Assembly and installation requirements

Designing the Component Around the Application

A standard piece of foam or tape may provide the right material properties, but converting that material into an application-specific component can improve both performance and manufacturing efficiency.

Custom die-cut parts can be designed around mounting points, electrical connections and complex geometries. Adhesive backing can help keep components positioned during assembly, while liners, tabs and other features can make installation faster and more repeatable.

Instead of adapting the assembly to accommodate a standard material, the converted component can be designed to fit the assembly.

Consider Vibration Earlier

Like sealing, insulation and thermal management, vibration control is easier to address when it's considered earlier in the design process.

At Muir Tapes & Adhesives, we work with manufacturers to turn foam, adhesive and specialty materials into custom converted components designed around real-world application and assembly requirements.
